A comfortable 19th century family home with fantastic views over town and harbour, El Gecko Bed and Breakfast is situated near Lookout Point, and is close to Oamaru's most popular attractions. The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony and the Yellow Eyed Penguin Colony are both just over 1km away, within easy walking distance if you have the time. There is also a lovely walk at the (sea) end of Avon St, which takes you up to Lookout Point. From there you can follow the track around Cape Wanbrow and down onto the beach.
History- The details are sketchy, but we believe our home was built in the 1860's, by an English hotelier for his daughter. Mr Thomas Proctor owned several hotels and a boarding house in Oamaru's heyday, and before the Temperance Movement turned the town `dry'! The original house on the hill, and home to many different families over the years, El Gecko retains many of its original features. However, restoration is an ongoing process. As one of the oldest buildings in Oamaru, ours is a much loved and admired character home. People often comment that it has a 'lovely feel'. We certainly enjoy living here and hope you will enjoy your stay with us.
